Wonderful Counselor

By Gina Elmes

Resources Wonderful Counselor
Isaiah 9:6, NIV
And he will be called . . . Wonderful Counselor.
When we look at the title of Jesus that is ‘Wonderful Counselor’ we need to look at each part of the name. First, we have the word wonderful. In our modern society, we understand the word wonderful differently than they would have in this ancient text. We would call a great meal, “Wonderful!”, as in the meal was pretty good. In Isaiah 9:6 it means ‘full of wonder, awe-inspiring, outside of human explanation, miraculous.’ Jesus was completely wonderful in every way.
His birth (Matthew 1:23),the miraculous miracles He performed (Matthew 4:23),the perfect life he lived (Hebrews 4:15),His resurrection (Mark 16:6),and His words and teachings (Matthew 13:54).The second part of His title is counselor. This refers to a wise king who gives guidance to His people. God foresaw that this world would be a place filled with people who were directionless and in need of wisdom. I have gone to God countless times asking for His wisdom and direction in pretty much every area of my life. There have been times when I have completely exhausted my own wisdom and still the problem remained. When I went to Jesus, who is my Wonderful Counselor, He gave me thoughts and plans that seemed to come out of nowhere! 1 Corinthians 1:30 lets us know that “Jesus became to us wisdom from God”. The Apostle Paul tells us that “in Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3). Even as a child Jesus was “filled with wisdom” (Luke 2:46-47).

How comforting to know that when we lack wisdom that we have a King who is willing to give from His bountiful riches of wisdom in whatever area we need it. The Scripture says that if you have need of wisdom, just ask Him for it and He will give it to you liberally (James 1:5). Do you need wisdom in your relationships, your marriage or with your kids? Do you need wisdom in your job? Do you need wisdom in how to deal with your finances? Are you making some big decisions in life and want wisdom from someone who knows everything and He also loves you and wants good things for you?

Whatever you need wisdom for, Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor has wisdom that is straight from Heaven just for you. Just ask.
God bless,

Gina
