The Word

By Olivia Elmes

John 1:1, NIV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Jesus is the Word of God made flesh, who made His dwelling among us (John 1:14). This part of scripture is so intriguing to me because it makes so much sense and so little sense at the same time. I think that the key to understanding this scripture is understanding the inseparability of God and His Word. Jesus, who is the Word of God, is God. Jesus is not a subsection of God; He is God. If He is the Word of God, then the Word of God is alive. We must not think of the Word of God as we think of ordinary words, or dictionary words. This Word is alive, it has breath and a pulse.

This word, word, is the Greek word logos. One definition of logos is the ‘spoken word of God’. This relates to my point above, that this Word has breath and a pulse. Spoken words have breath on them. It is clear, through scripture, that the spoken Word of God is extremely powerful. Genesis 1:3 tells us that God spoke “let there be light” and there was light. This is no ordinary word – it is a creative force like no other. Jesus was the embodied, spoken Word of His Father, sent to earth to live among us. He was always going to be the most powerful thing that earth had known since creation.

In many ways word is ‘revelation’. Throughout scripture, God reveals Himself to His people through His Word. Few have seen God, but many have heard His Word. Therefore, Jesus was the revelation of God on the earth as His Word. This puts greater importance on scripture because the Word of God is so powerful and so important. Scripture is our meeting place with God in many ways because scripture is the Word.

The Word is vital in our relationship with God because in the Word of God we will meet God! He and His Word are inseparable, they are one. We cannot love God and not love His Word. May our lives be ever more obsessed with this spoken Word. May we invest more time meeting God in His Word. It is alive!
God bless,

Olivia
