Once For All Time

By

I happened upon a piece of writing by a stylist in response to a question about key pieces of clothing that would outlast trends while still not making them outdated fashion, as opposed to trends that generally last one or two seasons. It wasn’t just her response that really got to me but the question itself.

We live in a world where trends, not just in fashion but in every aspect now, easily come and go. I sometimes miss these and only realise after they’ve gone. My daughter says it’s my age! So trends are very temporary. They don’t last, they make an impression and then disappear. And sometimes they come back round again; like flared leggings. While they may add to an overall look, you always keep coming back to the pieces that are the base for your wardrobe collection, and that’s what makes these key pieces timeless.

As we’ve been in the season when we celebrate the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, I couldn’t help but draw a parallel between things that are temporal and things that are eternal.

This momentous event occurred more than 2000 years ago. However, it is still as relevant today as it has ever been. The ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross is never outdated. He paid what I couldn’t and I’m so thankful that it lasts forever.

Hebrews 7:27 says ..Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.

That means I don’t have to look for an animal to sacrifice for my sins year after year, because the perfect sacrifice was made by the perfect Lamb. Any sacrifice that I or any of us could make would only be temporary. So as we celebrate, let’s not take our focus off the fact that what Jesus did at the cross is final.Hebrews 10:10 says For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.
