I’ve heard it said many times by Christians: “Whatever it looks like, Lord. Whatever it looks like to follow you that is what I will do, wherever you send me and whatever you need me to do I will do.”
As wonderful and surrendered as this declaration sounds, I heard the Lord nudging my heart to say not only, “Whatever it looks like” but also, “Whatever I look like”, declaring to Him that I will willingly become whatever He desires. Whatever I look like to other people, to my friends or family: Lord, I am willing. The Lord is looking for people who will not just go wherever He calls them, but are willing to be whatever He asks them. To become low, to become humble, to be a laughing-stock or to be mocked. People abandoned enough to forsake the whispers of the world around them for the voice of One they cannot yet see.
Whatever we look like, Lord. I pray that we would be more concerned with how He sees us than how anyone else may see us. Even if we look crazy or too far-gone to the people around us, we say yes. If what You ask of us makes us look foolish, we say yes. I pray our hearts would resound with a yes so strong that the fear of man is broken. We can say yes to God or we can say yes to Man, but we can’t say yes to both. If we live to please God then Man will not be pleased, and if we live to please Man then God will not take pleasure in that. Today, choose whom you will serve? Will you choose to live boldly in the sight of God, or perform for a temporary crowd on earth? The only reward for a life lived for the applause of man is a moment of praise. Why live for a moment of praise when a lifetime of adoration is available to you? It doesn’t matter what you look like on earth, to God you look outstanding.
Anyone that has ever done anything for God had to decide that they no longer cared about what people thought about them. For example, Noah: when he built that ark, no one in the whole earth had ever experienced or heard of rain. Noah looked like a crazy man, but he trusted in God and lived only to please Him.
Don’t hesitate to be obedient to God just because you might look crazy to your neighbour. Faith looks crazy – if it made sense then we wouldn’t need faith.
