As a child I thought the blood of Jesus was something mystical. I recall being a little girl and sitting in the prayer meeting of my local church and hearing people “plead the blood of Jesus” over cities, demonic influences, and impossible problems. It seemed that if you applied this wonderful and mystically powerful substance to a terrible situation, it was the cure, sort of like ointment for a really bad rash.
I was young and didn’t understand the Scriptures, and nobody was really able to explain to me why there was genuine power in Jesus’ blood. I did, however, understand that because Jesus died for me, His shed blood was my ticket to Heaven. At that young age, that seemed enough for me!
As I matured and studied the Word of God I discovered that His blood is so much more than just a ticket to Heaven. It has impact and benefits for my life here and now. His blood is actually a standard or banner that I live under at all times. I don’t need to pull out a tub of any kind of mystical ointment as and when the circumstances call for it.
A standard or banner is like a flag and its purpose is to declare something. In battles, standards were carried high and they were meant to intimidate and show that you were in strength and a force to be reckoned with. It’s the same for us – as the standard of Christ’s blood flies high above us, it declares to the enemy of our soul that we are forgiven (Ephesians 1:7), made holy (Revelation 1:8), and have full access to God with no hindrances (Hebrews 10:19). This crimson standard flying high over us reminds the devil that he is a failure. He failed to stop Jesus from procuring for us complete and utter salvation.
When you sleep and when you rise, this standard intimidates your enemy. Even when you have a bad day and you feel weak and tired, the standard still gloriously waves over you. Whether you are feeling in victory or not, the flag waves on like a big slap in the face to the one who wants to destroy you. Today, acknowledge Jesus’ blood that waves in victory over you declaring that you are a winner.
