Every single one of us is called to be a missionary in the world that He has given us. So often, when we talk of missionaries, we think of men and woman leaving the shores of their own lands to sail to far-off places with the agenda of sharing the Gospel with those who have not yet heard. Yes, this would be a true definition, but we also need to understand that each of us are missionaries in the local world that He has given us and is unique to us.
Don’t get me wrong, I believe it is good for every person to go on short-term mission trips – they are powerful and can bless others as well as changing you. And there will be those who know God’s call to long-term mission. But we also need to see our everyday world as our own personal mission field too, and realise that God has empowered us with the same power and ability to reach it as He has the ends of the earth.
Remember what Jesus taught the first disciples in our text today? He said, “Go.” This remains His commission to each and every one of us today. He says ‘go’ first to Jerusalem – Jerusalem to me represents the local world around you. He then mentions going further afield, even to the ends of the earth, but first comes your local world!
God wants to empower you to be a missionary and a soul winner wherever you wake up in the morning, to be a person who understands the worth of someone’s soul, whether they live on the other side of the world or just around the corner. I have said before that I believe it often takes more courage to be an ongoing witness in your everyday world than what it takes to be one in a place you visit and are not known. Why? Everyone knows you in your local world, there is no pretending or faking anything. But guess what, His grace and ability are as strong – if not stronger – here than when you are anywhere else.
Be His missionary today, wherever you find yourself. Make the decision to open your mouth and move from being a ‘silent witness’ to an empowered soul winner. As you do, watch the whole of heaven go ahead and back you up.
