Such a great little bit of advice to start our day!
This verse follows directly after the ones that describe for us the “fruits of the Spirit” that should be seen in our lives as followers of Christ. The verse reminds us of something then directs us to do something. Firstly it reminds us that we are now alive because of the Spirit. Every one of us came to God spiritually dead, with the spiritual death of Adam and Eve – remember in the Garden after disobeying God they died as He said they would if they ate of the fruit, not in their body or soul rather in the spiritual life they had from God from their formation when He breathed His life into them. Then, after they became dead of Spirit they gave birth to a humanity who were also dead of Spirit, because as I heard it said so well once, two dead parents can’t produce a living child. No, Scripture clearly reveals we remained dead with the death they birthed us into until God the Heavenly Father made a way through His Son for us to be “born again”, made alive again to Him with the very Life that Adam and Eve knew before their fall.
1 Corinthians 15:22 NIV
For as in Adam all die, so inChrist all will be made alive.
Colossians 2:13 NIV
When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins.
So through faith we enter into the grace of New Birth and we are made alive again to Him in our Spirit. His Spirit comes to live in us and we become temples of His Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16) and are delivered from our dead-like mere existence. When we realise we are now spiritually alive to God and that His Spirit now dwells in us it is easy to understand the directive He gives in the second part of the text when He writes that we are to now “keep in step with the Spirit”. That is really all you need to do to be a Spirit-led Christian: firstly, realise you are now alive and Spirit-filled, then purpose to listen and watch for His leading in what you do and stay in step with Him. If He goes left you go left, if He walks away from something you walk away with Him. If He wants to bless someone you allow Him to bless that life through you. This is “abiding in Him”, letting the life that is in the Vine (Jesus) be what daily flows through the branch (you).
Being Spirit-led is not hard, it’s really simple if you will listen for His leading and lay down your desires to walk in an opposite or contrary way. So today, Champion, remember you are no longer a mere man or mere woman, but you have been made alive by His Spirit, so purpose not to walk “out of step” but to stay “in step” with the Spirit. As you do that the fruit of who He is naturally grows in you and flows through you to bless others.
Have a Spirit-led day as you “stay in step with Him”.
